Anxiety

Anxiety is the body’s natural response to stress. It is a feeling of fear, dread, or unease regarding a future event or an uncertain outcome. While it feels unpleasant, it is actually an evolutionary survival mechanism designed to keep you alert.

It is important to distinguish between situational anxiety and a clinical disorder.

Situational Anxiety is helpful and temporary. It keeps you focused during a test or helps you to react quickly in an emergency. It typically disappears once the threat is over.

Anxiety Disorders occur when the anxiety is out of proportion to the situation, lasts for six months or longer, and interferes with daily life (work, sleep, relationships). In this state, the body's alarm system is stuck in the ON position even when there is no immediate danger.

Fortunately, anxiety is one of the most treatable mental health conditions. Managing anxiety often involves a combination of therapy, lifestyle changes, and, for many, medications. Understanding how anti-anxiety medications work can help you to have a more informed conversation with a healthcare provider.
